It's simple low end leg guard as it doesn't have padding in the shin area, just the knee area. The shin area has a couple nylon like bands to help absorb the impact of balls hitting it. It's lighter than the fully padded versions. But it doesn't have the padding that covers more of the sides of the legs that the more expensive models made by Rawlings have. So if planning to use for kids that aren't playing too high of a level of competition they would be fine (ie. a rec league or younger kids in a little league). For more talented catchers who move side to side and block balls with their bodies or smaller catchers playing with 11 year olds and older, I would recommend the fully padded versions.
